Ex-convict jailed two years for stealing handphone

A jobless man with six previous convictions was sentenced to two years in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today after he pleaded guilty to stealing a handphone.


R. Ganeson, 40, from Kuala Selangor admitted to snatching the handphone belonging to Vietnamese tourist Dinh Thi Tuyet Lan along Jalan Hang Tuah here at about 1.15pm on Feb 18.

He was unrepresented. In mitigation, he appealed for leniency.

Prosecuting officer C/Insp D.R. Ghanthi Nathan, however, sought a heavy sentence, saying that Ganeson had not repented despite having been convicted before of drug offences.

Magistrate Wan Nursalena Wan Abdullah ordered the jail term to start from the day Ganeson was arrested on Feb 18.
