KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Chun Seang and Kuan Beng Hong are the two Malaysian singles players who made it to the main draw of the US$200,000 Singapore Open badminton championships.
National championships runner-up Chun Seang defeated Indonesian Andreas Adityawarman 23-21, 21-16 in 32 minutes in the third round of the qualifying tournament at the Singapore Indoor Stadium yesterday.
But he faces an uphill task in the first round of the tournament proper tomorrow against fourth seed Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark.
Beng Hong eliminated Singapore’s Tang Kirt Soon 21-3, 21-3 in just 15 minutes to make the cut.
He will play against fellow Malaysian Mohd Roslin Hashim tomorrow.
Three other Malaysian men’s singles players – Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Allan Tai and Pei Wee Chung – failed to get past the qualifying rounds.
The only Malaysian woman to feature in the qualifying session yesterday, Lydia Cheah, fell by the wayside.
She was beaten 13-21, 15-21 by Singapore’s Gu Juan in 26 minutes.
The men’s doubles qualifying sessions will be played today.
