Nik Aziz quashes Pas-Umno reconciliation talks

KOTA BARU, Thurs:

Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat has quashed rumours of reconciliation talks between the party and Umno. In putting his foot down on any such plan, Nik Aziz said he was still bitter over the way Pas was treated by Umno when it was in the Barisan Nasional in the 70’s.

Citing the old saying “once bitten, twice shy”, he said he had not sanctioned any attempts to negotiate with Umno.

“If there are any negotiations going on, I don’t know about them and anyway, I will not agree to them. If it is between individuals then it is a different matter but not at party-to-party level,” he said at a Press conference at his home in Kampung Pulau Melaka here.

Meanwhile, Nik Aziz in voicing support for the Federal Government’s move to pay civil servants twice a month, said it would take some time for the state government to follow suit.

“I support the idea and I have asked the state government several years ago to look into the idea of paying weekly wages to our staff but I was told that it would be difficult to implement it.

“I prefer paying weekly wages but the state government officials said that it would cause more work and additional staff would have to be taken in.

“Now if the Federal Government is doing it, I don’t see why Kelantan should not do it. I am all for it,” he said.

Nik Aziz criticised the Federal Government for raising the price of fuel.

“The Barisan Nasional Government made a very unwise move in raising the fuel price when we should utilise natural gas which is much cheaper.
