KOTA BARU: A businessman’s daughter and granddaughter who were allegedly kidnapped by two renegade soldiers were rescued here yesterday, thanks to swift action by the police.

The six-hour ordeal of the 28-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter came to an end when policemen in a patrol car spotted the victim’s Proton Wira Aeroback being driven by one of the soldiers.

The victims were huddled in fear in the rear seat of the car.

Wasting no time, the patrol car rammed into the rear of the other car, causing it to skid and hit a divider at Kampung Kemumin, Pengkalan Chepa at 12.30am.

Police rescued the victims and detained the soldiers, aged 23 and 24.

Initial investigations revealed that the soldiers allegedly masterminded the kidnap of the batik businessman’s daughter and granddaughter outside the Wakaf Che Yeh wholesale market at 6.30pm on Saturday.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the suspects were being held in custody to facilitate investigations.

He said the victims, policemen and the suspects were unhurt in the incident.

Abdul Rahim also revealed that the soldiers had robbed the woman of RM130 and two hand phones.

He said the businessman had lodged a report at the Kota Baru police headquarters at 8.30pm, over the disappearance of his daughter and granddaughter.

The businessman said his daughter was to have fetched him from his shop two hours earlier but failed to do so.

Police later learnt that the woman and her daughter were kidnapped by two soldiers as they were leaving the market.

He said as the woman was driving out of the market area, her car was stopped by one of the suspects who got into the rear seat and brandished a knife.

“She was forced to drive through town and stopped at a patrol station to pick up another suspect before one of them took over the wheel,” added Abdul Rahim. – Bernama
