PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Super League (MSL) will go under the microscope next month.
The chairman of the local competitions committee, Datuk Che Mat Jusoh, said that the FA of Malaysia (FAM) would hold a two-day brainstorming session with state FA officials on July 20 and 21.
“A lot need to be done to the MSL, judging by the current state of affairs and shortcomings faced by state FAs in the competitions,” said Che Mat.
“Has the MSL been successful and has it helped in the production of new players? Has the MSL been complementing the national team with new talent?
“We have to discuss this at length. If we are going nowhere with our leagues, we have to review the whole competition structure all over again and find solutions.”
Che Mat added that they were unhappy with what the MSL had achieved since it was launched in 2004 after Malaysian football went fully professional in 1994.
He said that there had been many negative reports such as non-payment of salaries to players and FAs caught in financial problems in managing the teams.
“We are in the professional era and we cannot have passengers holding on and unable to contribute positively. All teams have to contribute and start looking at how the league can benefit the national team.
“Kedah have been good role models. They have a young set of players and won the FA Cup without two of their key foreign players. If we find that drastic measures need to be taken, we will do it.”
Che Mat did not rule out the possibility of doing away with foreigners or reducing their numbers in a team next season.
The current format of competition has 13 teams in the Super League and another 13 in the second-tier Premier League.
