KUALA LUMPUR: Banks and financial institutions are primarily responsible for the robberies that occur at their outlets, says Federal CID director Commissioner Datuk Mohd Bakri Zinin.
He said the recent spate of robberies of and from the automatic teller machines (ATM) was due to their negligence.
“We have found that most banks and financial institutions do not upgrade or maintain their security systems like they are supposed to.
“Our findings also show that some robberies involved staff and security personnel that the banks failed to monitor properly,” Comm Mohd Bakri said this at a news conference at Bukit Aman federal police headquarters here Friday.
He was commenting on the robberies in Subang Jaya, Bandar Baru Bangi and Brickfields.
Comm Mohd Bakri urged the public to at least alert the police on such incidents, especially at commercial areas.
He said banks and financial institutions were bustling with people everyday but according to victims, no one comes to their aid when they robbed.
“Some of the banks do not have proper close circuit camera T V (CCTV) systems to capture the incidents and so have to plead to those at the scene to at least alert us immediately on the incident so that we can deploy a patrol car,” he said.
Mohd Bakri also pointed out goldsmith outlets are also to be blamed for robberies that occur at their outlet.
“We had three meetings with jewellery outlet operators throughout Klang Valley but they have yet to comply on security measures which are standard operating procedures,” he added.
Meanwhile, Agro Bank in Putrajaya denied that their ATM was robbed it’s cash on June 26 and it was a false alarm.
In a statement issued through the city police, the bank clarified that their security firm, Securico were given permission to clear cash from the ATM for system maintenance.
