PETALING JAYA: Selangor have one more chance to land a trophy this season. And coach Dollah Salleh said that they would bounce back with vengeance after losing narrowly to defending champions Kedah in the FA Cup final last Saturday.
“We will be going all out to win the remaining silverware left this season – the Malaysia Cup. It is a tall order for my boys but not an impossible task,” said Dollah, whose side finished fourth in the Super League.
He added that Selangor had the material to make it happen and they would leave no stone unturned in the bid to claim the Cup.
“There are some weak areas in which we need to work on, especially the defence. It has been our main worry this season. If we can plug the gaps, I am sure we will be able to go all the way to win the title,” said Dollah.
Selangor backline of Evan Chislo, Razman Roslan, P. Gunalan and Mohd Asraruddin Putra have not been consistent.
In Malaysia Cup history, Selangor have emerged as the champions for a record 32 times. They have not made an impact since winning a treble in 2005 (Premier League, FA and Malaysia Cup). The following season, they fell to a slump and finished empty-handed.
Last year, Kedah achieved the treble winning the Super League, FA and Malaysia Cup titles. This season, they have proved that they are still the team to beat and have also retained the Super League title.
“I am sure Kedah are the favourites to win the Malaysia Cup as well. But we are desperate to end the season with the prestigious trophy,” said Dollah.
Selangor lead Group A on four points on better goal difference than Terengganu, Kelantan and Negri Sembilan. Sarawak are in fifth spot on three points while Malacca have yet to gain a point.
Johor FC and Kedah are the frontrunners in Group B on four points each while UPB-MyTeam are going great guns in Group C with maximum points from two matches.
The top two teams from the three-group preliminaries and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals.
