SHAH ALAM: Selangor took a jolt in their Malaysia Cup campaign when they lost 0-3 to Negri Sembilan in a Group A match at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.
It was the first defeat in three matches for the Red Giants, who are desperate for a silverware after losing to Kedah in the FA Cup final (2-3) last week.
But the Selangor side, playing in front of about 500 fans, were a let down last night and had two players, Mohd Amri Yahyah and R. Surendran, sent off in the last quarter of the match.
Negri’s national Under-23 striker Mohd Zaquan Abdul Razak put the Deer in front in the 31st minute and S. Kunalan and Lamin Conteh added a goal each in the 70th and 72nd minutes.
The defeat saw Selangor slip from the top of the table to fourth spot.
Negri Sembilan moved to the top on seven points ahead of Kelantan on goal difference. They edged Terengganu 2-1 at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
Defending champions Kedah, who besides the FA Cup have retained the Super League title, suffered a hiccup at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Star, crashing to their first defeat at home this season with a 0-1 defeat by Premier League side Kuala Lumpur in Group B.
The defeat for the Canaries was a major ssurprise because they were back at full strength following the return of defender Bernard Huggins and prolific striker Marlon James from national duty.
The duo had been away for almost a month for the St Vincent and Grenadines’ campaign in the 2010 World Cup qualifying tournament.
With overnight leaders Johor FC falling to a surprise 1-2 defeat by Sabah in Kota Kinabalu, KL move to the top of the table.
UPB-MyTeam kept their 100% record in Group C, edging Johor PG 3-2 in Johor Baru for their third win.
Perak thrashed Armed Forces 5-0 in Ipoh to move up to second place on five points.
