IPOH: A photograph of Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the 23-year-old aide who has alleged that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sodomised him, was brandished to a crowd of several thousand gathered to hear speeches by Pakatan Rakyat leaders at Stadium Perak on Sunday night.
While event organisers claimed that the allegation was a lie and a conspiracy by the Barisan Nasional government, Parti Keadilan Rakyat strategic director Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Anwar’s accuser could have been arrested and pressured to make false claims.
He voiced concern over Anwar’s safety, citing the 1998 incident in which the latter was arrested in his home and later assaulted by police.
The recent incidents were a recycled script of 1998, he said, when Anwar was accused of sodomy and abuse of power.
Anwar was freed on Sept 6, 2004 when the Federal Court set aside his nine-year jail term for sodomy in a 2-1 majority decision.
The court overturned his conviction on the basis of inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case although it said there was evidence he was “involved in homosexual activities”.
