SHAH ALAM: Selangor gave their fans plenty to cheer when they edged the S-League Selection 4-3 on penalties to lift the Sultan of Selangor Cup at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.
Both sides were tied 2-2 after regulation time and no extra time was played.
Cool finish: Mohd Safee Sali of Selangor beats S-League Selection goalkeeper Lionel Lewis for the equaliser at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.In a match played in front of 40,000 fans, the S-League Selection took the lead through Okayama Tatsuya in the first minute but Selangor equalised through Mohd Safee Sali in the 33rd minute. Safee gave Selangor the lead when he scored in the 60th minute but the Singapore side earned a late reprieve when Ashrin Shariff scored two minutes from time.
For the victory, Selangor, who were beaten by the Singaporeans in the last two editions, won RM50,000. The S-League Selection pocketed RM10,000.
In the curtain-raiser match, the Selangor veterans were beaten for the second consecutive year by their Singapore counterparts.
Selangor, who lost 0-1 last year, dominated play but ended up 7-8 losers on penalties after the score was tied at 1-1 in a match contested over 20 minutes in each half.
Selangor took the lead through P. Somasundram in the 26th minute but Singapore equalised in the 38th minute through Yahya Mahdon.
