KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore and Indonesian Open champions Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari may have not qualified for the Olympics but they will get to go to Beijing after all.
The request by doubles coach Rexy Mainaky to bring them along as sparring partners for the two pairs in the fray – Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong – has been accepted.
Chief coach Yap Kim Hock said after the weekly meeting with the coaches yesterday: “We’ll leave for Beijing earlier and there is a need to have several sparring partners. We have named one men’s pair and three men’s singles players.”
Singles coach Misbun Sidek recommended two back-up squad players – Chong Wei Feng and Tan Chun Seang. The duo have been sparring with Lee Chong Wei and Wong Mew Choo and Misbun felt that their presence in Beijing would do them good, especially when they are in the programme for the 2012 London Olympics.
Wei Feng and Chun Seang have showed improvement in their game since they began sparring with Chong Wei this year.
The other sparring partner is former Malaysian Open champion James Chua, who has been working with veteran Wong Choong Hann, who is the second Malaysian representative for the Olympic men’s singles competition.
