LONDON (Reuters) - Iran must allow peaceful protests against its disputed presidential election and ensure a fair result, Western governments said on Sunday, rejecting charges they were interfering in Iranian affairs.

Foreign countries have played no part in supporting the violent street protests that erupted in Iran after its June 12 election, Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Miliband said.

He dismissed comments from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calling on the United States and Britain to stop interfering in the Islamic Republic’s internal affairs.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Iranian authorities to recount votes, refrain from using violence against demonstrators, free detained opposition members and allow free media reporting of the protests.

“Germany is on the side of the Iranian people, who want to exercise their rights of freedom of expression and free assembly,” she said in a statement.

Mass protests erupted in Tehran after official figures showed hardline incumbent Ahmadinejad had won the election by a landslide. His main opponent, reformer Mirhossein Mousavi, says the vote was rigged. The government denies the charge.

Ahmadinejad was quoted as telling clerics on Sunday: “Definitely by hasty remarks you will not be placed in the circle of friendship with the Iranian nation. Therefore I advise you to correct your interfering stances,” in remarks the ISNA news agency said were directed at U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

‘DAMAGE IRAN’

“I reject categorically the idea that the protesters in Iran are manipulated or motivated by foreign countries,” Miliband said. “The UK is categorical that it is for the Iranian people to choose their government and for the Iranian authorities to ensure the fairness of the result and the protection of their own people.”

Clashes between police and protesters, in which Iranian state TV says 10 people died, were to be “deplored”, he said. “This can only damage Iran’s standing in the eyes of the world.”

Obama, who has been trying to mend ties with Iran since taking office in January, has urged Tehran to “stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people”.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said: “We ask the Iranian government to urgently adopt conditions to create a peaceful solution to the internal crisis. The right to safeguard human lives comes before everything else.”

But Frattini confirmed an invitation to Iran to attend a G8 meeting in Italy next week to discuss stability in Afghanistan.

In Paris, several hundred people, many of them students and personalities including former Culture Minister Jack Lang and the rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, Dalil Boubakeur, took part in a demonstration.

“The people voted for someone, they voted for Mousavi. They’re asking for democracy,” said an Iranian student at the University of Paris, who identified himself only as Omid. “This wasn’t an election, it was a selection,” he said.

In The Hague, about 100 people gathered in front of the International Court of Justice to show support for protesters in Iran, Dutch media reported. On Saturday, hundreds of people attended a vigil in Amsterdam for victims of the violence.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said tensions in Iran had added to risks facing the world economy.

“You can talk about Iran as part of a wider analysis that would be associated with risks for the oil markets, not just because of Iran but because of the whole region,” he told Europe 1 radio.

PETALING JAYA: Naib Presiden Gerakan, Huan Cheng Guan yang digantung keahlian selama tiga tahun kelmarin akan keluar parti itu jika hukuman tersebut tidak ditarik balik.

“Kemungkinan keluar… jika keputusan (menggantung saya) tidak dikaji semula,” kata beliau ketika dihubungi sambil menambah, beliau akan memutuskan mengenainya dalam tempoh dua minggu.

Jawatankuasa Kerja Pusat (CWC) Gerakan memberi tempoh 14 hari kepada Huan untuk membuat rayuan berhubung hukuman tersebut.

Huan, yang pernah menyatakan hasrat untuk keluar Gerakan tetapi mengubah pendiriannya untuk kekal dalam parti itu minggu lalu, telah digantung keahlian selama tiga tahun malam kelmarin.

Ketika mengulas lanjut keputusan CWC yang dimaklumkan semalam, Huan berkata, aspek yang dipertimbangkan sebagai alasan untuk menggantung keahlian beliau adalah terlalu remeh.

“Mereka kata mengambil tindakan kerana saya telah meminta penyokong-penyokong saya menggantung kain rentang mengkritik parti… sekarang budak tiga tahun pun tahu macam mana hendak menggantung kain rentang.

“Jadi, saya tidak perlu mengajar penyokong-penyokong saya menggantung kain rentang.

“Kemudian, mereka kata saya meminta 5,000 ahli Gerakan keluar parti. Mereka semua (ahli yang terbabit) ada fikiran, mereka tidak tahu berfikir sama ada nak keluar atau tidak?” katanya.

Tambah Huan, beliau juga kecewa kerana tidak diberikan peluang untuk menjelaskan keadaan sebenar sebelum CWC mengambil keputusan.

“Umno pun ada Lembaga Disiplin yang dengar aduan dan berikan tertuduh peluang untuk mempertahankan diri masing-masing.

“Ini dalam Gerakan merekalah polis, merekalah pendakwa dan mereka juga hakim,” katanya.

KUALA KRAI: Kerajaan pusat akan memberi penjelasan kepada rakyat Kelantan berhubung isu royalti hasil pengeluaran petroleum yang sering dibangkitkan oleh kerajaan negeri tidak lama lagi.

Menteri Perdagangan Antarabangsa dan Perindustrian Datuk Mustapa Mohamed berkata beliau akan mendapatkan laporan lengkap berhubung isu berkenaan terlebih dahulu bagi membolehkan penjelasan terperinci dibuat kepada rakyat agar isu itu tidak terus dikelirukan.

“Kami hendak buat persediaan terlebih dahulu bagi membolehkan penjelasan dapat diberi kepada rakyat,” katanya kepada pemberita selepas mengadakan perjumpaan dengan ketua-ketua cawangan Umno dalam kawasan Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Manik Urai di sini, hari ini.

Beliau berkata demikian bagi mengulas kenyataan Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Perancangan Ekonomi, Kewangan dan Kebajikan negeri, Datuk Husam Musa yang mendakwa kerajaan pusat belum menjelaskan tunggakan royalti petroleum RM1 bilion.

Husam mendakwa tunggakan itu sepatutnya dijelaskan oleh kerajaan pusat bagi membolehkan wang itu disalurkan kepada rakyat negeri ini.

KOTA BARU: PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said he was willing to forgive Umno if it apologised for “stabbing PAS in the back” 40 years ago.

He added that he was willing to bury the hatchet if Umno apologised for its “crime” against PAS.

“Do you think it is easy to forgive? If it was easy to forgive and forget immediately after a wrong is done there would be no point in learning history,” he told reporters before receiving PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at his official residence JKR 10 here Sunday.

Nik Abdul Aziz said this when asked to comment on Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement on Friday in which he asked PAS to let bygones be bygones and for the two parties to start on a new slate by having unity talks for the betterment of Malays and Islam.

Recently, the Kelantan Mentri Besar lashed out at PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa, telling him to join Umno if he wanted to pursue the unity talks with Umno.

Nik Abdul Aziz also challenged Nasharuddin to resign as the Bachok MP and contest on another ticket.

“Do not misunderstand me by thinking that I reject unity and am just being stubborn. If the issue was brought forward through the proper channels like drafted at the national level and then taken to the state level, followed by taking it to the Pakatan Rakyat for approval or discussion, I would not have opposed.

“But this was not done. That is why I am against it. Anyway, it would not be in the interest of party members and the party as a whole,” he said.

Nik Abdul Aziz reiterated that even if he agreed to the unity talks it should be based on Islamic unity and not the nationalist agenda championed by Umno.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported from Kuala Krai that Kelantan Umno was ready to talk to Kelantan PAS on the idea of a unity government.

“We are awaiting the green light from the Umno president before making any move,” Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Mustapa Mohamed told reporters after opening a poverty eradication programme here Sunday.

Mustapa was asked to comment on the call by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Friday that the talks be speeded up.

Mustapa said Kelantan Umno was adopting an open attitude on the matter.

“We have no problem carrying out the discussion in the interest of Muslims in the country,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

KUANTAN: A 17-year-old restaurant helper thought her employer was being kind by offering her a ride home but she ended up being raped.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner T. Narenasagaran said the incident occurred on Monday at the restaurant in Simpang Kalang, Raub, at 11.45pm.

He said the 33-year old man offered to take the girl back to her rented home in Taman Amalina Bestari but took her to his house instead on the pretext of picking up something. He then raped her.

He told her to keep quiet but the girl called her family who took her to Raub police station to lodge a report.
