KUALA LUMPUR: Chelsea Football Club’s search for their next teen football idol kicked off yesterday with 300 youths attending tryouts for reality television show Super Soccer Star Malaysia at Bukit Jalil.
The show was a phenomenon when it premiered in China last year and local organisers are hoping for the same when it debuts on Jan 7 on RTM2.
The contest, open to boys aged 13-16 years, started its registration drive on Oct 13, getting more than 5,000 participants.
The contestants were subjected to the first cut via SMS voting, shortlisting the hopefuls to 300.
The show is produced by British reality show giant Galleon Entertainment and local production partner, Nafalia Corporation.
Nafalia Corporation executive producer Mohd Najib Jaafar said yesterday’s audition would be aired on Jan 7.
Only 20 finalists will compete in the following episodes.
The top four finalists will be sent to the Chelsea FC Youth Training Academy in London to be assessed by the club’s coaching staff, alongside other young international football talents.
The final winner, selected by public vote, will be rewarded with a training stint there.
With such a coveted grand prize, it was little wonder that the 300 youths remained energised and enthusiastic throughout the gruelling five-hour tryout which tested everything, including basic skills, pacing, scoring, juggling ability and game knowledge, under the watchful eyes of head coach, former Pahang coach Ahmad Yusoff.
“Super Soccer Star will be the most talked about football reality show and a fantastic opportunity to show off our young football talents,” said Najib.
Galleon Asia Pacific group managing director Gerald Tan said that even in the recruitment phase, the contestants displayed the charismatic football skills, determination and star power the producers were looking for.
Officiating at the event yesterday was Information Ministry secretary-general Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf who believed that the show’s national television debut would complement RTM’s plan to rebrand itself.
Super Soccer Star Malaysia is also supported by the Football Association of Malaysia and the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Just as Chelsea FC is sponsored by Samsung, the show is sponsored by Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd.
The company’s corporate marketing director, Bryan Lee, said that home viewers would get a chance to win autographed Chelsea merchandise and Samsung products.
