Veron: I turned down offer to join City

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina’s Juan Sebastian Veron (pic) turned down a personal offer from Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini to join the Premier League club, the midfielder said on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Estudiantes captain told the radio station La Red that he was phoned by Mancini, a former team-mate of his in Italy and his coach at Inter Milan, to make the offer.

Mancini took charge of Manchester City last month.

“I presented the offer to the directors of the club (Estudiantes) so they could consider it, maybe it appeals to them. For my part there isn’t much thinking to do, my (negative) answer was instantaneous,” Veron said.

“It’s not possible at the moment and it’s not a question of money … My family and my affections are involved,” he said.

Veron has a strong bond with Estudiantes, whom he led to the South American Libertadores Cup title in July and second place behind Barcelona in the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi last month.

His performances for Estudiantes and Argentina have seen him voted South America’s top player for the last two years after a glittering career in Europe, especially Italy, though he also played for City’s local rivals Manchester United.

Veron said he returned to his home town of La Plata in 2006 to see out his career with Estudiantes and try to lead them to more trophies after his father Juan Ramon helped the team lift the Libertadores Cup three times from 1968 to 1970.

“I took a decision and I want to respect it. I can’t leave, I’d be going against my convictions, I’d be letting myself and the fans down above all else,” said Veron, who donates part of his salary to Estudiantes’ youth scheme. — Reuters

Cantona slams Henry and coach Domenech

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

MARSEILLE: Former French international Eric Cantona launched a stinging attack on national coach Raymond Domenech on Friday following France’s controversial qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

“I think that Raymond Domenech is the worst coach in French football since Louis XVI,” Cantona told reporters at a press conference ahead of a beach soccer tournament due to take place here from Nov 27-28.

French king Louis XVI was executed by French revolutionaries in 1793 and is commonly depicted as an indecisive, dithering monarch.

“If it was up to me, I’d put (Bordeaux coach) Laurent Blanc in charge of the France team,” the former Manchester United hero continued.

“He continues the season with Bordeaux, he wins the league with Bordeaux and he wins the World Cup! I’m not the only one who thinks that…”

Cantona, who today is an actor and coach of France’s beach soccer team, also criticised the attitude of Thierry Henry, whose handball set up France’s winning goal in their 2-1 aggregate playoff victory over Ireland.

“What shocked me most wasn’t the handball, honestly,” said Cantona.

“What shocked me most was that at the end of the match, in front of the television cameras, this player (Henry) went and sat down next to an Irish player to console him, even though he’d s*****ed them three minutes earlier.

“If I’d been Irish, he wouldn’t have lasted three seconds.” — AFP

Benitez: I will quit if Torres is sold

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Rafael Benitez has revealed he would be prepared to quit as Liverpool boss if star striker Fernando Torres is ever sold against his will.

EFE

Rafael Benitez would not stick around if Fernando Torres was sold against his will.

The club’s well-publicised debts have led to questions about whether owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett would be tempted should a big-money offer come in for the Spain striker.

But Benitez told the Times the 25-year-old would not be sold at any cost.

“I’m confident it will never happen,” he said. “If it did, I’d resign.”

Liverpool’s £20 million man Alberto Aquilani was their only high profile arrival in the summer and Benitez has often bemoaned his inability to compete with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in the transfer market.

And while the Spanish boss admitted the situation had led him to make some mistakes, he was defiant about his transfer policy.

“When we have spent big, normally it’s been very good business,” he said. “Torres, (Javier) Mascherano, (Pepe) Reina, (Xabi) Alonso.

“(Robbie) Keane is a good player but we had to sell him because he was not playing at the level we knew he could play. “Ryan (Babel) was signed for the future and we are waiting for his improvement. He has to be more consistent.

“With the fringe players, we needed to take a gamble on Bosmans and one, two million-pound players. Some of these players have not been good enough for us. It is a risk you have to accept when there is not too much money about.”

Benitez defended the signing of midfielder Aquilani, who was bought for from Roma to replace Alonso after the Spain international joined Real Madrid in the summer, but is only now reaching fitness after injury problems.

“We can only buy one or two big, £20 million players a year,” Benitez said. “If we want to have money available then we have to sell some players. We have to sell expensive and buy as cheaply as possible.

“Aquilani fit would be £20-30million. We checked with doctors and they said he would be out one, maybe two months. We have lost some time, but I signed the player for five years, not five weeks.”

With Liverpool struggling for form and lying seventh in the table having lost five league games already this season, many believe their title aspirations are already dead, while qualification for the knockout stage of this season’s Champions League has also been cast into serious doubt.

“People are worried,” Benitez said. “But the team will improve. When we have key players on the pitch we are as good as anyone. We have proved this in the past.’

Real: Ronaldo’s ankle not improving

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo’s ankle had not improved by Wednesday, so the Real Madrid forward was set to consult his former specialist to treat the injury.

Ronaldo, who has been sidelined by the right ankle injury for nearly one month, underwent medical scans that showed no progress.

The Spanish club said Ronaldo will visit Professor Niek van Dyjk, the Holland specialist who treated the same ankle in 2008 when he was at Manchester United.

Real had been hopeful the 24-year-old winger would be available for tomorrow’s derby against Atletico Madrid but it appears the injury could be more serious than originally believed. Real trail Spanish League leaders Barcelona by one point after nine games.

Ronaldo has scored nine times in seven games since his record ‚94mil move from United, with Real winning every game he has played in.

Ronaldo injured the ankle during a Champions League match against Marseille and aggravated the injury while playing a World Cup qualifying match for Portugal on Oct 10. He was originally expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks. — AP

Fowler a star in late-career switch to Australia

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP): Robbie Fowler has found a place in the sun, one where he can still be a star on the field yet be anonymous off it.

The ex-Liverpool striker, nicknamed “God” by his fans at the Kop when he was at the height of his goal-scoring powers in the English Premier League, has reinvented himself as a football missionary in a two-season deal with new Australian A-League club the North Queensland Fury.

After an important goal to earn the Fury its first home win in Round 12, he moved to second place in the league’s scoring list with a double in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Gold Coast United.

Three goals in two matches have lifted his tally to eight at the midway point of Australia’s season. And it has dragged the club off the bottom of the table after it opened with three losses.

Not that Fowler thinks it’s because he’s only now finding his range.

“I think I settled in straight away. From the minute I touched down in Townsville, I’ve been made to feel like one of the lads,” he said after his two-goal performance on the Gold Coast.

“I’ve said right from the start, it’s not about scoring goals. The most important thing is getting three points. If I’m scoring, or somebody else is scoring, it doesn’t really matter.”

There were plenty of questions asked about his motives when the 34-year-old former England international chose not to pursue another Premier League deal and, instead, relocated his wife and four children to the transport and agricultural hub of 160,000 people in tropical north Queensland.

It’s hot all year and usually humid, even in the monsoonal downpours, and it’s about as far away from the premiership as he could have got in the English-speaking world.

There was speculation he would quit even before he started. After all, he’d reportedly turned his back on an earlier offer from the more glamorous Sydney FC – the same club where ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke spent his time in the A-League.

Critics said Fowler was overweight and supposed he only wanted to holiday on the Great Barrier Reef, or was only in it for the cash.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson, a Scot, was never among the doubters.

“If he’s in holiday mode, I can’t even imagine what he’d be like if he was taking it seriously,” Ferguson told The Associated Press.

“Robbie’s an absolute professional. A star player – a marquee for us and the league. “He’s got too much status, too much pride to put at stake to come here and just have a holiday.”

Football Federation Australia, which relaunched the national competition as the A-League in 2005-06, is delighted with Fowler.

Average crowds have dropped across the league from a peak of 14,600 per match in 2007-08 to roughly 10,000 this season, but the FFA says that is because there are more teams and the venues are further afield.

Getting crowds of 7,000 to Townsville matches is a real coup, considering it is home to successful teams in national rugby league and basketball competitions.

“Robbie Fowler is a model marquee player,” the FFA’s spokeswoman Bonita Mersiades told the AP.

“Not only is he exemplary off the field and helping to build football’s profile in North Queensland and elsewhere, but he has been outstanding on the field.

“His class as a player is a joy to watch and his eight goals so far this season include at least four that are goal-of-the-season contenders.”

Gold Coast midfielder Michael Thwaites got a close up look as Fowler’s sweetly timed strike gave the Fury a lead in the 64th minute last weekend.

“He taught us a lesson,” Thwaites said. Only 2,616 were at the match amid a protest against Gold Coast United’s billionaire owner Clive Palmer’s decision to impose a cap of 5,000 on the crowd to save $100,000 in venue operational costs.

Michael Fenson, an Englishman wearing the Fowler No. 9 on his back, was among the sprinkling of fans wearing green Fury jerseys.

Fenson has lived in Australia for four years and has attended two A-League matches – both to see Fowler.

He said he’d been watching Fowler since he scored on first-team debut in the league cup at Fulham in 1993, then scored five goals in the return match.

“He’s as good a finisher as I’ve ever seen,” Fenson said moments before Fowler scored in the 64th, then he laughed and continued, “See. He’s got a gift.”

While he’s made himself at home in Australia, from where he controls his vast English property portfolio remotely, Fowler is being careful not to get too comfortable.

“I’ve been told that back home they reckon I consider myself Aussie these days,” Fowler wrote in a newspaper column.

“I posed for a photo to help out Australia’s 2018 football World Cup bid, agreeing to hold up a green and gold scarf. When I came over here, from the start I have said I will do anything that can help promote the sport in this country and I have kept my word.

“Of course England are a rival to host that year, so it hasn’t gone down well back home.”

So he wanted to set the record straight. “Obviously, being English, and with it being in 2018, I’ll probably be back home then, so I would like to see the World Cup there,” he said. “But if England don’t get it I think Australia would deserve it.”

In Sydney, the club had a Beatles tribute band playing and a red double-decker bus parked outside the stadium to welcome Fowler.

In north Queensland, rugby league territory, Fowler had “been a slow burner,” the Townsville Bulletin’s sports editor, Ray Andersen, says. But Fowler’s recent exploits are changing that.

“To be honest, he’s probably had a bigger impact on the rest of the league than he has here so far,” Andersen told the AP in a telephone interview. “He could walk around town, people aren’t mobbing him in the streets like they would be in Liverpool.

“Coming from England, where you’re in that environment where you’re life’s in the spotlight all the time, he’s probably enjoying keeping out of it a bit.”

The Fury is averaging 6,975 fans at Dairy Farmers Stadium, which seats 25,000 and is frequently full when the North Queensland Cowboys’ home National Rugby League matches.

But even the Cowboys fans have been curious, and with the NRL in recess and with the Fury winning back-to-back for the first time, Andersen and others are convinced Fowler will start pulling bigger crowds.

“By the end of the season, he’ll go down in the short history of the A-league as the most influential of the marquee players,” Andersen said.

Ferguson also has no doubt Fowler will leave his legacy in Australia.

“He’s genuine in what he’s doing here,” Ferguson says. “You only need to see the impact he has on the other lads to know that.”

Man United, Tottenham progress in League Cup

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

LONDON (AP) – Manchester United and Tottenham each won 2-0 to progress to the quarterfinals of England’s League Cup on Tuesday and keep alive the chances of a repeat of last season’s final.

Danny Wellbeck and Michael Owen scored to give defending champion United victory at lowly Barnsley in a match marred by crowd trouble, while Tottenham beat Premier League rival Everton through goals by Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane.

Goalkeeper Brad Guzan saved four penalties, including three in the shootout, to give Aston Villa a 3-1 shootout win at Sunderland, Blackburn conceded two equalizers before beating Peterborough 5-2, and Portsmouth showed the sort of form it needs to get off the bottom of the Premier League by beating Stoke 4-0.

United manager Alex Ferguson rested most of his regular starters and fielded a team featuring three right backs but his side went ahead in the sixth minute, Wellbeck connecting with a simple header from Anderson’s corner.

Owen, starting just his fifth game since joining United, showed a glimpse of the form that made him the 2001 European player of the year in the 59th when he won the ball 25 meters (yards) from goal, beat three defenders and shot past the goalkeeper.

Gary Neville was sent off moments later for a foul on Adam Hammill to give Barnsley hope against a team that had dominated the opening exchanges to such an extent that the home team’s first corner in the 22nd was greeted with huge cheers.

Striker Daniel Bogdanovich headed just wide from the corner to start a period of pressure by Barnsley, which is without a major trophy since the 1912 FA Cup, but the League Championship side was denied a goal by its poor finishing.

But United may be in trouble with football authorities after some of its fans apparently smashed up areas of Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium while celebrating the win.

Tottenham, which won the League Cup in 2008 and lost last season’s final in a shootout, fielded a changed team because of injuries to Jonathan Woodgate, Aaron Lennon and Peter Crouch but hit the post through Keane in the 30th and went ahead in the 31st.

Wilson Palacios intercepted on the edge of his own area to start the length-of-the-field move that led to the goal. Palacios passed to Keane and his quick ball to the right found David Bentley, who raced down the wing to curl in a cross that went over Keane’s head, under Roman Pavlyuchenko’s foot and into the net off a fierce half volley by Huddlestone.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes prevented an equalizer at the start of the second half with an acrobatic save from Tim Cahill before Keane won a penalty that led to his goal.

The Ireland striker lured defender Distin into bringing him down in the area and took the resulting penalty. Tim Howard saved the kick and blocked Bentley’s shot on the rebound before Gareth Bale’s attempt hit a defender and rebounded to Keane, who volleyed in from close range.

“People who came in all did a good job for us,” Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said. “Anyone watching that game for us tonight would think, ‘He’ll do for me, David Bentley.”‘

Redknapp said Bentley would likely play against former club Arsenal on Saturday, with Lennon set to miss out because of injury. Louis Saha had gone close for Everton in the fourth minute following a free kick awarded at the end of his side’s first attack. Spurs cleared the kick and the ball was played back in, Saha controlling with his knee about 12 meters (yards) from goal before volleying acrobatically over his own head for Gomes to tip over.

Guzan stood in for fellow American goalkeeper Brad Friedel at Sunderland and saved a second-half penalty from Kenwyne Jones to earn Villa a 0-0 draw in regulation time.

He then stopped kicks by Andy Reid, Lorik Cana and Jordan Henderson to earn Villa a place among the last eight sides.

Morten Gamst Pedersen, Steven Reid, Michel Salgado, Benni McCarthy and Nikola Kalinic scored for Blackburn, although the Premier League side was held to 2-2 until former Spain defender Salgado hit his first goal in English football in the 57th.

Frederic Piquionne scored in each half to lead Portsmouth, the Premier League’s last-place team, to its biggest win since September 2007, when it beat Reading 7-4.

The remaining fourth-round games are scheduled for Wednesday, when Arsenal hosts Liverpool, Chelsea hosts Bolton and Manchester City hosts League Championship side Scunthorpe.

United on top, Liverpool flop

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

LONDON: Manchester United regained top spot in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford yesterday as Liverpool’s title bid suffered a potentially fatal blow.

Reigning champions United are a point ahead of Chelsea, who started the weekend in first place, but were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa.

Liver pool’s quest for a first topflight title since 1990 could now be over after a 1-0 loss away to Sunderland — their fourth league defeat in nine games, twice as many as they suffered in the whole of last season.

Tottenham remain third as former Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp saw his current side hang on to beat the basement club 2-1 in a Fratton Park match where both sides finished a man down.

Spur s’s north London rivals Arsenal moved into the top four with a 3-1 win at home to Birmingham.

Manchester United went ahead in the fifth minute when Bolton defender Zat Knight put through his own net after Patrice Evra’s cross was flicked on by Michael O we n .

They doubled their lead when Antonio Valencia turned in Gary Neville’s cross at the near post to score his first United goal since his pre-season move from Wigan.

Matthew Taylor’s header 15 minutes from time gave Bolton hope.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti was frustrated after setpiece errors cost his side dear at Villa Park.

They took a 15th minute lead when Didier Drogba’s long-range shot bounced awkwardly in front of goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

But Villa levelled before the break when a poor header by England midfielder Frank Lampard allowed Richard Dunne to equalise from a corner.

Early in the second-half Villa again made Chelsea pay at a corner when James Collins rose highest to head the hosts back into the lead.

“We lost this game because there were two setplays from which Aston Villa scored two goals,” said Ancelotti.

“We need to be more focused in these situations.” Sunderland took the lead against Liverpool in extraordinary fashion at the Stadium of Light when striker Darren Bent’s fifth minute shot hit a stray balloon on its way past Pepe Reina.

Liverpool, without injured stars Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, also survived seeing Bent glance a header just wide before the striker hit the post with an angled shot.

The match ended with tempers boiling over with rival managers Rafael Benitez and Steve Bruce exchanging angry words. At Fratton Park, Redknapp saw Spurs go ahead in the 29th minute when Niko Kranjcar — one of several former Portsmouth players in the visitors’ line-up — crossed for Ledley King to head home.

Before the break they were 2-0 up when Pompey old boy Jermain Defoe turned in Jermaine Jenas’s c r o s s.

But in a twist former Spurs midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng fired home for Pompey from close range just before the hour and shortly afterwards Tottenham were downto 10-men when Defoe was red-carded for lashing out at South Africa’s Aaron Mokoena.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes preserved Spurs’s lead before Po m p e y ’s Michael Brown was sent-off just before the finish for a second yellow card.

At the Emirates, goals from Robin van Persie and Abou Diaby gave Arsenal an early lead before Lee Bowyer pulled one back for Bir mingham.

Andrei Arshavin sealed Arsenal’s victory six minutes from time.

In other games, Stoke beatWest Ham 2-1 while Everton and Wolves drew 1-1.

James Beattie put Stoke ahead from the penalty-spot at the Britannia Stadium, but second-bottomWest Ham levelled before the break when Matthew Upson headed in a corner.

Beattie restored Stoke’s lead when Rob Green could only parry Ricardo Fuller’s shot.

There was deadlock at Goodison Park until the 76th minute when Wolves forward Kevin Doyle got on the end of a long ball.

But the visitors were denied a valuable victory when Diniyar Bilyaletdinov equalised two minutes from time before Wolves’s Stefan Maierhofer was sent-off. — AFP

EPL 2009-10 Season: Wenger rues more penalty controversy

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

LONDON: Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal’s contentious 2-1 defeat at Manchester United left him unsure whether to laugh or cry.

An eventful week for Arsenal ended in chaotic fashion at Old Trafford on Saturday with Wenger ordered from the sidelines by referee Mike Dean for kicking a water bottle in frustration at the official ruling out Robin van Persie’s last-gasp effort because teammate William Gallas was offside.

Earlier, Dean had denied Andrei Arshavin a clear first half penalty after a challenge by Darren Fletcher; awarded Wayne Rooney a dubious penalty after Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia dived at his feet and cautioned Emmanuel Eboue for diving in the second half.

Just days after Eduardo was charged retrospectively by UEFA for allegedly diving to win a penalty in the Champions League tie with Celtic, it was an extraordinary sequence of events, capped by United’s winner coming from an own goal by Arsenal defender Abou Diaby.

“I kicked the bottle of water, when the goal was cancelled, out of disappointment,” explained Wenger of his dismissal. “The fourth official called over the referee and sent me off.

“I don’t know what to say, there were 30 seconds to go, it must have been spectacular! I didn’t even know where to go. He told me to go into the stand but there was no way to get into the stand. Just because I kicked a bottle of water.”

Wenger was similarly light-hearted when asked how he had seen the decision to award Rooney a second half penalty from which the England striker scored United’s equaliser.

“Old Trafford-ish,” smiled Wenger before going on to claim Arshavin should also have been awarded a spot kick in the first half.

“Maybe I’m not the most objective but, for me, I believe that was a penalty,” said the Arsenal coach.

The irony was not lost on Wenger that there were similarities in the Rooney penalty decision and the one won by Eduardo in midweek, not that the Arsenal manager expects the England striker to be criticised in the same way as his Croatian international has been.

“There will be a big difference in the newspapers,” said Wenger.

“UEFA have made their case against Eduardo but you watched the European Super Cup on Friday and they will have to charge (Barcelona’s Lionel) Messi for a head butt or they will lose credibility.

“They have opened something there. Over the weekend I will find 50 situations where they can intervene.

“If they don’t, Eduardo will have been singled out. I don’t think Eduardo’s case has any logic because I looked again and he was touched. We have clear proof that from behind he was touched on his right leg.”

In this of all weeks, Arsenal would not have wanted to see Eboue booked for simulation, as he was late in the game, although, true to form, Wenger leapt to the defence of his player.

“I believe you should look at the game and look at who is playing with real spirit on the pitch,” he said. “I felt we played with the right spirit. It is difficult to judge every time somebody goes down.

“I have seen a (United) player make 20 fouls without getting a yellow card. If you have seen the game, you don’t need me to tell you who but their player gets away without a yellow card. It’s quite amazing.”

That thinly-veiled reference to Fletcher summed up the frustration of a manager who had seen his team collect six bookings, to United’s three.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, perhaps predictably, had no such qualms about the referee’s performance — particularly the decision not to give Arshavin a penalty.

“Darren Fletcher clearly got the ball,” said Ferguson. “The referee was 10 yards away, it was never a penalty kick. We got lucky with the own goal but it was a clear penalty (for Rooney).” — AFP

Fergie expects Owen goal spree

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

HANGZHOU: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said new signing Michael Owen could score 15 goals in the new season as the coach plots a record fourth consecutive Premier League crown.

Ferguson has handed Owen the legendary No 7 shirt, worn by greats such as Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Ronaldo, and believes the England international can pose a major goal threat.

Ferguson, speaking after the arrival here of the Red Devils for the final match of their Asian tour, said the former Newcastle United player had a great goalscoring pedigree and even continued to find the net in the past two years when his Newcastle side struggled.

“I hope he gets plenty,” said Ferguson, when asked how many goals Owen would score for his new side.

“If he plays 25 games for me next season I think he’ll get 15 goals,” he added.

Owen, who joined the Premier League champions on a free transfer earlier this month, has enjoyed a good start to his United career, bagging a goal in both of the Red Devils’ games in Malaysia.

But even with the departure this summer of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, competition up front remains fierce, with Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and teenaged Federico Macheda vying for starting spots.

Ferguson said he had been rotating the four strikers during the Asian tour in a bid to test his options, particularly with the arrival of Owen and the emergence of Macheda.

“We have to find out and understand the best possible combinations for those four players,” he said.

United wrap up their Asian tour with a match against Hangzhou Greentown today looking for a clean sweep after two wins in Malaysia and one in South Korea. — AFP
