Rakyat Mencari Pemimpin Yang Berjuang Untuk Mereka!

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

ALOR STAR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has quit Umno saying he has totally lost confidence in its leadership.

 daily-news

He made the unexpected announcement in front of about 1,500 people at a forum in response to a dare from one of the participants to lead the way in leaving the party.
Asking other Umno members to follow in his footsteps, Dr Mahathir, 83, said they should not join any other political parties but should rejoin Umno once Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has resigned as party president and prime minister.

“The Malays, Umno members and many other people have sent him messages about their dissatisfaction over his leadership, especially after the March 8 elections, but Abdullah has remained unaffected.

“We have to be radical and brave and this is the only way to bring him down,” he said to loud cheers at a talk on “The Future of Malays after the 12th General Election”, organised by the Kedah Malay Assembly Hall.

Among those present were assembly chairman Tan Sri Khalid Abdullah, Jerlun Umno division chief Datuk Abdul Rahman Ariffin, Kuala Nerang state assemblyman Datuk Syed Sobri Syed Syed Hashim, Sungai Tiang state assemblyman Suraya Yaacob and former Kedah menteri besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid.

Dr Mahathir, an Umno life member, announced his decision after someone asked if he would take the lead since he had made the suggestion during his hour-long talk earlier.

A member from the floor, who had identified himself as Ismail Jaziz, had asked Dr Mahathir if he would take the lead since he had mooted the idea about members resigning.

To this, Dr Mahathir, in a serious tone, said: “Waa, saya di cabar ni…(I have been dared). Yes, I will leave Umno…until the party leadership is determined. Other Umno members should follow me.”

Later, at a press conference, Dr Mahathir said he would write to Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor over his decision soon.

Asked if many Umno members would take up his challenge, he said it was up to them to prioritise Abdullah or the party’s struggles.

“It is up to them to follow or not, but if they think they should continue supporting Pak Lah and give priority to Datuk Abdullah (Ahmad) Badawi over the party’s struggles, it is their right.”

He said it was high time for Umno members who loved the party to be bold for the future of the Malays. Such a move would not cause the Malays to lose their political power.

“The Malays would not lose their political power. They want to correct things not because they simply want to leave.

“If they are brave and want to safeguard the party and the Malay struggles, then they must also be brave to take action.

“However, we find that many Umno members can’t even attend certain gatherings… division chairmen also cannot attend… what is this?”

Dr Mahathir said when Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah opposed him before, former prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman had thrown in his support for his opponent and that he never stopped any member from campaigning against him.

“Now, we cannot say anything against the prime minister or the party president. This is not Umno,” he said.

Asked if Umno state assemblymen and MPs should also quit the party, he said they should if they truly loved the party.

Dr Mahathir reiterated he would only rejoin Umno after Abdullah had resigned his posts.

Asked if his call and decision could be construed as him giving up on the party, he said he would not ask others to follow him if he himself was afraid to do so.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir said quitting the party would not weaken Umno because he himself was expelled from the party for three years from 1969.

“Umno remained strong and it continued to get support from members who were honest in fighting for the race, religion and country then.”

He said he was compelled to issue a strong message to the Umno leadership to start listening to members’ needs and not heed only suggestions and advice from a small group of powerful people.

He said Abdullah was not suitable to lead the nation because he was too soft and would give in to Singapore, the United States, Hindraf and the Bar Council.

He said Abdullah had consistently refused to accept the fact that under his leadership, Umno and Barisan Nasional were on the verge of collapse after they lost five states, including the Federal Territory, and failed to recapture Kelantan.

“He is responsible for destroying BN component parties like the MCA, MIC, Gerakan and PPP when they lost miserably in the last elections.

“As a result, the Chinese and Indian communities, which had been ardent supporters of BN, no longer have confidence in the ruling coalition.”

Dr Mahathir said the people of Kedah should also do something for being treated unfairly by Abdullah since they did not have any representative in the cabinet.

“We lost Perak, Penang, Selangor and Kelantan but they have representatives in the cabinet, but why is there no one from Kedah?”

Asked if his decision had anything to do with the V.K. Lingam video clip controversy, Dr Mahathir denied it.

“Nope. That is a court matter and I will go to the courts.

“If they make allegations against me, I could also do the same and if I am found guilty, they can put me in jail but if I am not guilty, please don’t arrest me .”

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s political career

  • 1946: Joined the Kedah branch of the newly-formed Umno
  • 1959: Proposed that candidates for that year’s general election be selected on certain qualifications, a proposal that angered some quarters of the party. After being accused of scheming and trying to get his allies to contest, Dr Mahathir refused to be involved in the elections that year
  • 1964: Won the Kota Setar Selatan seat with a 60 per cent majority
  • 1969: Lost the Kota Setar Selatan seat by 989 votes to Yusoff Rawa of Pas
  • In July, Dr Mahathir was sacked from the Umno Supreme Council for publicly criticising prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman on how the country’s administration was conducted
  • 1972: Rejoined Umno
  • 1973: Appointed a senator
  • 1974: Relinquished the senatorship to contest the Kubang Pasu seat, which he won unopposed. Was made the education minister

  • 1976-1981: Deputy prime minister
  • 1978-1981: Appointed minister of trade and industry
  • July 16, 1981: Appointed prime minister and home affairs and defence minister
  • 1983 and 1991: Removed the royal veto and royal immunity from prosecution
  • 1987: Was challenged for the party president’s post by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah but won by 43 votes. Unhappy with the results. Tengku Razaleigh’s supporters took the case to court, resulting in the de-registration of the party and the 1988 judicial crisis
  • 1988: Dr Mahathir believed to have sparked off the judicial crisis which saw former lord president Tun Salleh Abbas and five other judges sacked
  • 1998: He accused former finance minister and deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy and abuse of power. (Anwar was sentenced to six years’ jail for corruption and another nine years for alleged homosexual acts. In 1994, the Federal Court reversed the second conviction and he was released)
Took over as Finance Minister 1 after Anwar’s sacking
  • 1999: Handed over the Home Affairs Ministry to newly-appointed Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
  • 2001: Also assumed post of special functions minister

Mahathir tells BN Govt to take Anwar’s threat seriously

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has asked the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government to take the threat made by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim seriously in that Pakatan Rakyat will form the next federal government in the near future as it had convinced more than 30 BN Members of Parliament to cross over to the opposition front or Pakatan Rakyat.N has 140 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat and Pakatan Rakyat 82 out of a total of 222 MPs.

“Well, I think it is a possibility that you can’t dismiss lightly. Now, these politicians are interested in how much they get, they are not interested really in serving the nation.

“People who feel that they did not get what they wanted presently and they are offered positions, the urge to cross over especially when there is no inherent loyalty to the party.

“I feel very strong (about it), it can really happen. I first wanted to dismiss this possiblity but on studying the situation I feel that there is great danger.

“Now, these politicians are interested in how much they get, they are not interested really in serving the nation.

“Of course, if this government loses power, it will not be in a position to dole out all kinds of goodies because at that time the clout is gone,” he told reporters after delivering a keynote address on “National Sovereignty” at the 7th Perdana Discourse Series at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, here.

Asked if this was his greatest fear, he replied that if the cross-over were to take place, then Malaysia would experience “a lot of conflicts”.

“We see the response of the Malays, for example. They have come up with a list of demands for this and that in response to the demands made by the others. They think that the solution is to abandon this concept of democracy, that they should go back to the feudal style of government.

“There is already talk among them…I don’t know how serious it is but the fact that it is being actually voiced (out) is very disturbing,” Dr Mahathir said.

To another question on where the Opposition would obtain the 30 MPs, the former Prime Minister pointed towards Sabah and Sarawak.

“If we take Umno, MCA and MIC, they have their roots here (in the peninsula) but not in Sabah and Sarawak. Although you have Umno in Sabah, it is transplanted from here to there. They are used to smaller parties. So can we be sure that they will remain strongly loyal to Umno? I don’t think so,” he added.

He said even in the peninsula, there could be MPs who could cross over since they knew that they could be in the new opposition-led government.

Dr Mahathir said this crossing over would not a problem if BN had won by a two-thirds majority in Parliament as even if a BN MP were to cross over, he or she would not be able to gain much since the MP would still be with the Opposition.

“But now if they crossed over, they could be joining another government, they will not lose, in fact they can make money,” said the 83-year-old former leader.

He felt that Pakatan Rakyat was a force to be reckoned with not because it was strong or the people loved the Opposition but because “the feeling of disappointment.”

“(Penang Chief Minister Lim) Guan Eng, for example, is quite smart. He is not antagonising the people, instead he is winning their respect.

“You see in the last election, BN voters and supporters voted for Opposition, thinking that this will send a message to the BN. Apparently the message is not properly read and if the governments headed by the Opposition show good governance, (are) concerned about the people, not greedy, not corrupt, then when the next election comes those who voted for them will continue voting the Opposition,” he said.

Don’t believe Anwar, urges Liow

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

PENANG: The Chinese community has been advised not to be hoodwinked by PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s promises.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said Anwar had caused “severe” damage to the community through his many unfair policies when he was Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister.

“He was responsible for putting non-Chinese educated administrators in Chinese schools and he was also against relocating Chinese schools or increasing the number of Chinese schools,” he said at a luncheon with state MCA committee members yesterday.

“But now he is portraying a totally different image. He can promise you the world since he is no longer in power and even the DAP and PAS are placing high hopes on him to bring changes.”

He also criticised PAS for trying to implement the hudud law and hit out at DAP for forming a collaboration with the Islamist party in the five Pakatan Rakyat-led state governments.

“Their collaboration with PAS has raised concerns among non-Muslims who have always been fearful of PAS’ plans to set up an Islamic state,” he said.
